  • Has strong local funding connections or is eager to cultivate them.

Initial Focus Areas

  • Identify and prioritize strategies to diversify and expand funding sources (individual giving, grants, corporate partnerships).

  • Connect the organization to warm contacts who could be potential donors and funders

  • Oversee donor database management, newsletter communications, and gift processing

  • Strategically involve board in fundraising, including reviewing Bloomerang data and present this data at board meetings

  • Partner with Executive Director to kick off the annual campaign

As funding grows, the Development Director’s role will evolve to:

  • Lead donor cultivation and stewardship directly

  • Manage all grant prospecting, writing, and reporting

  • Build or improve fundraising systems, processes, and donor communications infrastructure

  • Take a more active role in campaigns, events, and direct donor outreach

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of nonprofit fundraising experience, ideally with small- to mid-sized organizations

  • Proven success in developing fundraising strategies, leading campaigns, and building donor pipelines

  • Local ties to Durham’s funding community, especially in literacy/education, preferred

  • Ability to operate strategically in a lean, evolving organization

  • Strong commitment to educational equity and culturally responsive philanthropy

Compensation
Commensurate with experience.

What We Offer

  • Flexible schedule with hybrid remote/in-person work based at a vibrant co-working space in downtown Durham

  • PTO that includes time off for numerous holidays, including a full week during the winter break

  • A supportive, inclusive organizational culture that promotes professional and personal growth

  • A mission and program that are easy to champion and inspire broad community support
